“Life may have been elementary and monotonous, but it was placid and serene, and permitted time for reflection and thought, and for a simple but basic religion. Without that, no one will ever understand the essential Masselink tradition.”

The Kleine Masselinks are my ancestors. Below is a list of everyone known with the surname Kleine Masselink. An * means date of birth; + means date of death; and ‘um’ means around the date shown. Almost all Kleine Masselink’s were born, lived, and died at or near their small farm community of Hardinghausen. If they moved to their spouses’ location, they generally lived and died where their spouse lived and died. The last known child given the surname Kleine Masselink was born in 1866. Our Kleine Masselink ancestors dropped the title ‘Small Farmer' (Kleine) when they emigrated to the Netherlands and the United States, as that designation only meant something in Germany.
The title Kleine (Small) meant that our oldest known Grafschaft Bentheim ancestor was a farmer who held title to a piece of inherited property split off from a larger farm that was probably known originally as the Masselink Hof (Farm). The farm was located in what is now known as Hardinghausen, County of Bentheim, State of Lower Saxony, Germany.
One became a 'Kleine' only through inheritance. When a farm was split in two as part of an inheritance, the division was often unequal, usually 3/4 and 1/4. Whoever got the original smaller share of the property became known as the Kleine or in this case, Kleine Masselink. The one who got the larger share of the property became known as the Grote, or in this case, Grote Masselink. No record has been found as to who the original farmer was when this farm was split by inheritance or when the split actually occurred, although the inheritance probably occurred sometime around or before 1660, as that is the birth year of the first person known with the surname Kleine Masselink.
The Kleine Masselink’s have no known common ancestor with the Grote Masselink’s, the Masseling’s of Grafschaft Bentheim, or to most of the other Masselink’s in Germany and the Netherlands. We can speculate that the reason that the Grote's and Kleine's are not related is because sometime after the farm was originally split into two, the larger share was later sold to an unrelated family. As was the custom, when a new family bought a farm they were often required to take as their new last name the original name of the farm. Thus, they became the unrelated "Grote Masselink" family.
Most of our Kleine Masselink ancestors were farmers who lived in the Bauerschaft (farm community) of Hardinghausen which is located near Uelsen in Grafschaft Bentheim. A Bauerschaft is comprised of a collection of Bauernhöfe (farms) which were numbered like today's house numbers. The church or nobility usually owned the land, which was leased to a Colon (independent farmer). The occupational term Colon is derived from Colonat, which is a full size farm, including housing, buildings, land, livestock, and live-in laborers and other staff. Occupations such as cottager (Kötter, Koetter, Halbbauer) and tenant farmer (Heürling) were also represented on a Colonat. The farm of a cottager was generally a sub-division of an old farm. He may have held title to his property, but his land rarely provided for all the needs of his family. The cottager usually had to supplement his income by working for his Colon or in some other trade. A tenant farmer leased a small house from his Colon and was obliged to work for his landlord in exchange for a small piece of land to be cultivated for personal use. The tenant farmer did not hold title to the property on which he worked. The last three generations of Kleine Masselink's in Bentheim were Colons.
Speculation: Before 1791, the Kleine Masselink farmers were probably Kötter (cottagers) who held title to a small piece of property. This changed around 1791 when Fenne (1771) inherited enough land from her father and first husband so that her combined farm became self-sufficient. As a result, Fenne's second husband became the first known Kleine Masselink Colon. Fenne's son, Gerrit Hendrik (1792), was the second known Colon and her grandson, Hendrik (1829), was the third and last known Colon of the Kleine Masselink property. Hendrik (1829) remained the third Colon until he emigrated to Michigan in 1881 with his four unmarried daughters and his son Gerrit Hendrik's future wife, Etta Poets.
The following are all our known Kleine Masselink ancestors.
1660
KLEINE MASSELING, Fenne * um 1660 in Hardinghausen, + 1731 in Hardinghausen
KLEINE MASSELING, Harmen * um 1660 in Hardinghausen, + before 1713 in Hardinghausen. HARMEN and FENNE Kleine Masseling are our oldest known direct ancestors. They both were born around 1660 in the small farming community of Hardinghausen and married in Uelsen sometime before 1693. The names of Harmen's and Fenne's respective siblings and parents are unknown. Also unknown is Fenne’s or Harmen’s respective surnames before marriage, as either could have been a Kleine Masseling before marriage. They had four children, all born in Hardinghausen: GEERD Kleine Masseling (1693), Gese Masseling (1707), Albert Kleine Masseling (1711) and a second Geerd Masseling (1713). After Harmen’s death, Fenne married Jan Bekhuis (* um 1668 in Getelo) on 23 APR 1713 in Uelsen; no known children. Only two of Fenne's children were registered with the surname Kleine Masseling; the other two were registered with the surname Masseling. Harmen died in Hardinghausen around 1713 and was buried in Uelsen. Fenne died in Hardinghausen and was buried in Uelsen in April 1731. Unless their Kleine Masseling surname was changed to his or her spouse's surname at the time of marriage, all of Fenne and Harmen's descendants born in Grafschaft Bentheim after 1713 were given the surname Kleine Masseling at birth. In tracing our ancestry, Fenne and Harmen are Generation One.
1693 KLEINE MASSELING, Geerd * um 1693 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, father HARMEN (1660), mother FENNE (1660). Geerd marries Swenne WESSELER on 9 JAN 1718 in Uelsen; Ten children born in Hardinghausen with the surname Kleine Masseling: HARMEN (1719), Jenne (1720), Jan (1725), Geerd (1728), Hendrikjen (1730), Fenne (1731), Hendrik (1734), Geerdjen (1738), Derk (1741) and a second Fenne (1743). Geerd is Generation Two.
MASSELING, Gese * um 1707 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, father HARMEN (1660), married Hendrick Ten Hagen around 1734, no known children.
KLEINE MASSELING, Albert * um 1711 in Hardinghausen, + 30 JUL 1750 in Hardinghausen, father HARMEN (1660), no known spouse or children.
MASSELING, Geerd (#2) * um 1713 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, father HARMEN (1660), no known spouse or children.
1719-1729
KLEINE MASSELING, Harmen * 1 DEC 1719 in Hardinghausen, + 5 NOV 1747 in Hardinghausen, father GEERD (1693), HARMEN married Fenne Bargman around 1741 in Uelsen, two children born in Hardinghausen with the surname Kleine Masseling: Swenne (1742) and HENDRIK (1747). Harmen is Generation Three.
KLEINE MASSELING, Jenne * um 1720 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, father GEERD (1693), married Harmen Sielman 23 JUN 1742 in Uelsen, no known children.
KLEINE MASSELING, Jan * 4 AUG 1725 in Hardinghausen, + 14 JUL 1789 in Hardinghausen, father GEERD (1693), married twice: (1) Wübbe Maatman 9 JAN 1752 in Uelsen, four children born in Hardinghausen with the surname Kleine Masseling: Geerdjen (1753), Gerrit (1755) who married his niece Fenne (1771) sometime before 1789, Harmtjen (1757), Geerdjen (1760); (2) Gese Greven 13 SEP 1761 in Uelsen, one daughter born in Hardinghausen with the surname Kleine Masseling: Wübbe (1766).
KLEINE MASSELING, Hendrik * um 1727 in Getelo, + 6 OCT 1790 in Hardinghausen, father Jan Masseling (1697), married Harmken Voelkers in 1752 in Uelsen, one child born in Hardinghausen, Fenne Masseling (1760). This is the only known case when someone is born a Masseling and takes the surname Kleine Masseling. Neither Hendrik nor his wife were from Hardinghausen or born a Kleine Masseling. Their daughter has the surname of Masseling, not Kleine Masseling. Both Hendrik and Harmken died in Hardinghausen, which means they probably both spent their lives working on the Kleine Masseling farm and per tradition, Hendrik took the Kleine Masseling family farm surname as his own. His grandfather, Jan Masselink (1675-1732), is the first known Masselink born in Getelo. Hendrik is not related to the Kleine Masseling’s.
KLEINE MASSELING, Geerd * 18 JUL 1728 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, father GEERD (1693), married Gese RöRik 26 JAN 1755 in Uelsen, takes Gese’s surname RöRik upon marriage and moves to her family farm in Hilten, nine children born in Hilten and all with the surname RöRik. Gese probably inherited a farm with a land dowry that required the family farm to remain in the RöRik name which required Geerd to change his surname from Kleine Masseling to RöRik.
1730-1739
KLEINE MASSELING, Hendrikjen * um 1730 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, father GEERD (1693), one child born in Bauerhausen with surname Koning.
KLEINE MASSELING, Fenne * 18 MAY 1731 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, father GEERD (1693), married, one child KLEINE MASSELING, Zoon (Son) * 12 OCT 1788 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, mother FENNE (1731). See Derk (1778).
KLEINE MASSELING, Hendrik * 9 APR 1734 in Hardinghausen, + 26 MAR 1795 in Hardinghausen , father GEERD (1693), no known spouse or children.
KLEINE MASSELING, Geerdjen * 3 AUG 1738 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, father GEERD (1693), no known children.
1740-1749
KLEINE MASSELING, Derk * 8 JAN 1741 in Hardinghausen, + 22 JUN 1814 in Itterbeck, father GEERD (1693), no known spouse or children.
KLEINE MASSELING, Swenne * 29 JUL 1742 in Hardinghausen, + 18 MAR 1796 in Halle, father HARMEN (1719), married, 7 children born in Halle with surname Stönnebrink.
KLEINE MASSELING, Fenne * 22 SEP 1743 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, father GEERD (1693), no known spouse or children.
KLEINE MASSELING, Hendrik * 24 MAR 1747 in Hardinghausen, + 13 MAR 1798 in Uelsen, father HARMEN (1719). HENDRIK married Aale Holt (Holthuis?) 13 MAY 1770 in Uelsen, six children with the surname Kleine Masseling, all but Gerrit and Jan born in Hardinghausen: FENNE (1771), Hendrik (1773), Harmon (1775), Geerd (1783), Jan (1779 in Uelsen?), and Gerrit (1786 in Halle). Jan (1779) is listed in the Masselink family tree but is not listed in the German Kleine Masseling registry. Hendrik is Generation Four.
1750-1759
KLEINE MASSELING, Geerdjen * 24 JUN 1753 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, father Jan (1725), no known spouse or children.
KLEINE MASSELING, Gerrit * 6 AUG 1755 in Hardinghausen + 3 JUL 1789 in Hardinghausen, father Jan (1725), married his niece FENNE (1771) Kleine Masseling sometime before he died in 1789, no known children. When Gerrit died, FENNE probably inherited his farm. If he had not married Fenne, Gerrit's farm probably would have been taken over by the landlord and the Kleine Masseling family would have lost all their rights to this property.
KLEINE MASSELING, Harmtjen * 16 OCT 1757 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, father Jan (1725), no known spouse or children.
1760-1769
KLEINE MASSELING, Geerdjen * 18 MAY 1760 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, father Jan (1725), no known spouse or children.
MASSELING, Fenne * around 1760 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, father Hendrik Masseling (1727) from Getelo, (Hendrik Masseling changed his surname to Kleine Masseling-see above); Fenne was a Masseling. Fenne married Gerrit Hombert on 3 MAY 1789 in Uelsen, no known children. This Fenne's family came from Getelo and she is not related to the Kleine Masseling’s.
KLEINE MASSELING, Wübbe * 9 FEB 1766 in Hardinghausen, + 2 FEB 1830 in Haftenkamp, father Jan (1725), married Jan Grobbe on 12 OCT 1793 in Uelsen, four children born in Haftenkamp with the surname Grobbe.
1770-1779
KLEINE MASSELING, Fenne Fenne * 22 MAR 1771 in Hardinghausen, + 20 NOV 1843 in Hardinghausen after becoming "enfeebled", father HENDRIK (1747). FENNE married three times: (1) To her uncle, Gerrit Kleine Masseling before 1789 in Uelsen. No known children. When Gerrit died, FENNE probably inherited his farm. (2) To Hendrik Groene on 6 FEB 1791 in Uelsen. At the time of the marriage, Hendrick Groene changed his name to Kleine Masselink because FENNE had a land dowry that required the farm to stay in the Kleine Masseling family name; five children born in Hardinghausen with the surname Kleine Masseling: GERRIT HENDRIK (1792), Janna (1794), Aale (1799), Jan (1804), and Hendrikjen (1807). (3) To Gerrit Koelman on 4 SEP 1811 in Uelsen. At the time of the marriage, Gerrit Koelman changed his name to Kleine Masselink because FENNE had a land dowry that required the farm to stay in the Kleine Masseling family name, one child born in Hardinghausen with the surname Kleine Masseling: Hendrika (1812). Fenne is the author's only known direct female descendant, as Fenne kept her maiden name of Kleine Masseling during her three marriages. Fenne inherited her father Hendrik's farm in addition to her first husband's (her Uncle Gerrit Kleine Masseling) farm. This gave Fenne enough property to have her second husband (Hendrik Groene Kleine Masseling) become the first known Kleine Masseling Colon. There is no record of Fenne's third husband, Gerrit Koelman serving as a Colon after her second husband's death in 1810. That means that her son Gerrit Hendrick (1792) and her grandson Hendrik (1829) were the second and third Kleine Masseling's to hold the title of Colon (independent farmer). Fenne's grandson Hendrik was also the last Kleine Masseling Colon, as he emigrated to Michigan in 1881. Fenne is Generation Five.
KLEINE MASSELING, Hendrik * 26 FEB 1773 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, father HENDRIK (1747), no known spouse or children.
KLEINE MASSELING, Harmen * 3 SEP 1775 in Hardinghausen, + 25 FEB 1795 in Hardinghausen, father HENDRIK (1747), no known spouse or children.
KLEINE MASSELING, Derk * 10 MAY 1778 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, mother FENNE (1731), no known spouse or children
KLEINE MASSELING, Jan, also known as Jan Masselink, * 13 MAR 1779 + 8 SEP 1852 in Molendijk (Hoogeveen), Netherlands, father Hendrik (1747). Jan was born in 1779 in either Uelsen or Hardinghausen, Grafschaft Bentheim but permanently emigrated to Hoogeveen, NL where many of his descendants still live. When he left Grafschaft Bentheim, his surname was changed to Maslink, the Dutch spelling of Masseling. The surname Maslink was later changed to Masselink. Jan is not listed on the German Kleine Masseling registry. He is listed on our family tree as the son of Hendrik Kleine Masselink (1747). He worked in Hoogeveen as a carpenter (timmerman) and as a textile dyer (vervener).
1780-1789
KLEINE MASSELING, Jan * 13 MAR 1780 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, mother FENNE (1731), no known spouse or children
KLEINE MASSELING, Geerd * 20 JUL 1783 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, father HENDRIK (1747), no known spouse or children. Geerd was at Waterloo as a Hanoverian soldier and and returned home to Grafschaft Bentheim after the war. The Hanoverian army was historically aligned with that of Great Britain, since the King of England also was at that time the Elector and Duke of Hanover. The Hanoverian Army contingent in Wellington’s army at Waterloo was fully integrated into the British divisional structure; it comprised five infantry brigades, a cavalry brigade, two artillery batteries and a ‘reserve corps’ that was not committed to the battle. The Hanoverian army formed the majority of the Allied army in what is now Western Germany and was commanded by the Duke of Brunswick. Battle of Waterloo - Wikipedia
KLEINE MASSELING, Gerrit * 15 FEB 1786 in Halle, + date and location unknown, father HENDRIK (1747), no known spouse or children.
KLEINE MASSELING, Zoon (Son) * 12 OCT 1788 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, mother FENNE (1731). Child’s named was not recorded, probably died at birth. (See Derk (1788).
1790-1799
KLEINE MASSELING, Gerrit Hendrik * 29 JAN 1792 in Hardinghausen, + 22 DEC 1870 in Hardinghausen, mother FENNA (1771). Hendrick Jan (1832) is in the Masselink family tree but not in the Kleine Masseling records in Germany. Gerrit Hendrik is Generation Six. His sons Hendrik, Hendrick Jan and Harmon emigrate separately to the United States
KLEINE MASSELING, Janna * 3 DEC 1794 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, mother Fenna (1771), no known spouse or children.
KLEINE MASSELING, Aale * 2 AUG 1799 in Hardinghausen, + date and location unknown, mother Fenna (1771), married, no known children.
1800-1809

1810-1819
KLEINE MASSELING, Hendrika * 4 JUL 1812 in Hardinghausen, + 18 AUG 1862 of cancer and buried in Uelsen, mother Fenne (1771), married, three children born in Uelsen with the surname Hölscher.
1820-1829
KLEINE MASSELING, Fenne * 29 AUG 1825 in Hardinghausen, + 10 APR 1861 in Schale, father Gerrit Hendrik (1792), married, no known children.
KLEINE MASSELING, Aale * 19 DEC 1827 in Hardinghausen, + 27 DEC 1827 in Hardinghausen, father Gerrit Hendrik (1792), died at ten days old, buried in Uelsen.
KLEINE MASSELING, Hendrik * 9 MAR 1829 in Hardinghausen, +1907 in Graafschaap, Michigan, father Gerrit Hendrik (1792), married Geerdjen Walkotte 12 APR 1855 in Uelsen (her father was a Colon in Veldhausen). HENDRIK was a Colon in Hardinghausen, like his father Gerrit Hendrik, five children born in Hardinghausen with surname Kleine Masseling: Fenne (1855), GERRIT HENDRIK (1858), Hendrikjen (1860), Harmina (Minnie) (1864), Aleida (Lyda) (1866). He was our fourth ancestor to emigrate to the United States and he and his four daughters were the last known Kleine Masselink ancestors to emigrate to America from Grafschaft Bentheim. Hendrick emigrated together with his four unmarried daughters and with Etta Poets, his son Gerrit Hendrik's future wife. After emigrating, his surname was changed to Masselink. Hendrik is Generation Seven.

(2) To Wilhelmina Postma in Michigan, five children born in Bentheim, Michigan: Susan (1877), Albert (1879), Grace (1881), John (1883) and Harm (1888). Jan is not listed in the German records but is in the Masselink family tree. Jan dropped the Kleine from his surname and changed his surname to Masselink (the Dutch spelling of Masseling) when he immigrated to Michigan. He was our first ancestor to come to America.
Hendrik Jan (Kleine) Masselink was born in Bathorn, Parish of Arkel, in Bentheim on 11 Feb. 1832; Married on 20 July 1863 in Westerbork, province of Drenthe, Netherlands to Zwaantje Klompmaker, born 15 Oct 1828 in Haftenkamp (Bentheim), daughter of Jan Klompmaker (née Rengelink) and Ale Klompmaker. GERRIT HENDRIK (also known as GH), his father Hendrik, his uncles Jan and Harm, and his sisters Fenne, Hendrikjen, Harmina, and Aleida, all emigrated to the United States in the second half of the 19th century. See 'GENERATIONS' tab for details. GERRIT HENDRIK is Taylor’s Great-Great-Great Grandfather. He is our last direct ancestor to be born in Grafschaft Bentheim. After emigrating to America, his surname was changed to Masselink. He was our third ancestor to emigrate to America. Gerrit Hendrick is Generation Eight.
1860-1869
KLEINE MASSELING, Hendrikjen (Hendrika) * 3 OCT 1860 in Hardinghausen + 1941 USA, father Hendrik (1829), Religion: Separatist, emigrated to the U.S. with her father and sisters in 1881, married John Mast and Henry Vangests; nine children total, all born in Michigan.

Gerrit Hendrick, his sisters (Fenne, Hendrikjen, Harmina, and Aleida), his father Hendrik, and his uncles Jan and Harm emigrated to Michigan in the second half of the 19th century. Upon arrival in America, they all shortened their Kleine Masseling surname to Masselink, the Dutch spelling of the German "Masseling".
OTHER KLEINE MASSELINK'S
KLEINE MASSELING, Oude Knecht (Old Farmhand) + 9 FEB 1748 in Hardinghausen.
KLEINE MASSELING, Oude Man (Old Man) + 20 SEP 1771 in Hardinghausen.
KLEINE MASSELING, Oude Man (Old Man) + 6 MAY 1774 in Hardinghausen.
KLEINE MASSELING, Oude Man (Old Man) + 3 JUL 1789 in Hardinghausen.
KLEINE MASSELING, Kind (Child) + 4 SEP 1793 in Hardinghausen.
Speculation: The "Other" Kleine Masseling’s shown above have no identified first names and were buried in the church graveyard in Uelsen, Grafschaft Bentheim. The Oude Knecht and Oude Man listed above were probably hired farmhands and as was the custom then, they took Kleine Masselink as their new surname because Kleine Masselink was the name of the farm where they worked and lived. The term ‘Oude’ meant that they were retired, but they still lived on the farm. It is doubtful that any of these people were related to our Kleine Masselink ancestors. The Kind probably died at childbirth as a child of a farmhand.
There are at least 11 generations of Masselink surnamed ancestors before the birth of our first known ancestors in 1660. The names of these previous generations of ancestors are unknown.

Below is a list of everyone known who were given the surname ‘Kleine Masselink’ at birth since 1660.
* = Date of Birth; + = Date of Death; and ‘um’ or 'abt' means Around or About the Date Shown.
GENERATION ZERO
Before 1660; No known ancestor by name.
GENERATION ONE
Information about Harmen’s (1660) and Fenne’s (1660) siblings and parents is unknown. Also unknown is when the Hardinghausen Masselink Farm was first split into two because of inheritance, but the split was probably no later than 1711, as their 2nd child, Albert, was born in 1711 with the surname of Kleine Masselink. Researching this will be difficult as the official records kept in the local village town hall in Uelsen, Grafschaft Bentheim were reportedly destroyed during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648).

1. Fenne Kleine Masselink (1660 GB); Father Unknown; * abt 1660 in Hardinghausen; + 1731 Apr in Hardinghausen and buried in Uelsen; Known in Uelsen records as: Old Masselink Female from Hardinghausen (Oude Masselingsche tot Hardinghausen); Date her surname changed from Masselink to Kleine Masselink unknown.
1. Harmen Kleine Masselink (1660 GB); Father Unknown; * abt 1660 in Hardinghausen; + um 1713 in Hardinghausen; Date his surname changed from Masselink to Kleine Masselink unknown.
Harmen and Fenne, our oldest known ancestors, were both born around 1660 or after in the farming community of Hardinghausen and probably married in the village of Uelsen before their son Geerd's birth in 1693 ; The names of Harmen's and Fenne's respective siblings and parents are unknown; Also unknown is Fenne’s and Harmen’s surname before marriage, as either could have been born a Masselink or a Kleine Masselink. Harmen is buried in Uelsen sometime around or after April 1713; Fenne is buried in Uelsen around April 1731.
Four Children (GEN 2): 1.1. Geerd Masselink (1693) was a farmer (landbouwer) who later went by the surname Kleine Masselink; 1.2. Gese Masselink (1707); and 1.3. Albert Kleine Masselink (1711); 1.4. Geerd #2 (1713); All were born in Hardinghausen
The first two of their children, Geerd and Gese, were registered with the surname 'Masselink'. Throughout the generations of Kleine Masselink's, only Geerd and Gese (plus a child of Jenna Kleine Masselink (1794 GB 6) whose mother was Fenne Kleine Masselink (1771)) were known to have been registered with the surname 'Masselink' instead of 'Kleine Masselink'. The reason in Jenna's case is that the father of her child was "unknown". In Harmen's and Fenne's case, we can speculate that their children, Geerd and Gese, were surnamed 'Masselink' and not 'Kleine Masselink' at birth because the Masselink farm had not yet been divided by inheritance, so Harmen and Fenne did not become Kleine Masselink's until after they inherited the smaller (kleine) share of the Masselink(g) farm.
2nd Marriage (Fenne); After Harmen’s death, Fenne marries Jan Bekking (or Bekhuis) in Uelsen on 1713 Apr 23 (Jan was born in Getelo); No known children; Jan Bekking, Soon van sal. Jan Bekking tot Getelo (Jan is the son of the [salig] deceased Jan Bekking from [the town of] Getelo).

Harmen and Fenne, our oldest known ancestors, were both born around 1660 or after in the farming community of Hardinghausen and probably married in the village of Uelsen before their son Geerd's birth in 1693; The names of Harmen's and Fenne's respective siblings and parents are unknown; Also unknown is Fenne’s and Harmen’s surname before marriage, as either could have been born a Masselink or a Kleine Masselink.

1.1.10. Fenne [#2] Kleine Masselink (1743 GB 3); Father Geerd Kleine Masselink (1693); * 1743 Sep 22 in Hardinghausen; This is the second child of Geerd named Fenne; No known spouse or children

See 'GENERATIONS' tab for details. GERRIT HENDRIK is Taylor’s Great-Great-Great Grandfather. He is our last direct ancestor to be born in Grafschaft Bentheim.

1.2. Gese Masselink Ten Hagen (1707 GB 2); Father Harman Kleine Masselink (1660); * um 1707; Maiden name Masselink, not Kleine Masselink possibly because the Masselink farm was not yet split by inheritance; um 1734 Marries Hendrik Ten Hage (*1709) in Uelsen; No known children.

GENERATION FIVE
5.1 Fenne Kleine Masselink (1771 GB 5); Father Hendrik Kleine Masselink (1747); * 1771
Mar 22 Hardinghausen; + 1843 Nov 20 Hardinghausen; Married three times:
(1st) 1789 May 3 to Gerrit Humberink (Hombert) (Age 32) (1757 - um 1790) in Uelsen just after Fenne's 18th birthday; No known children; Gerrit Humberink (Rufname: Kleine Masselink) * 1757 Feb 28 Hilten; + um 1790; Husband Gerrit took the last name of 'Kleine Masselink' because Gerrit lived and worked on the Kleine Masselink farm after his marriage to Fenne; In 1769 Gerrit's father, Jan Hombert (1728 - after 1769), is recorded as a Colon in Hilten.
Fenne probably inherits her father Hendrik's farm after he died in 1790. As a result of this inheritance, Fenne's second husband, Hendrick Groene (Rufname: Kleine Masselink), became the FIRST known Colon of the combined Kleine Masselink farms sometime after their 1791 marriage.
QUESTIONS/SPECULATION: Did Fenne inherit father-in-law Jan's farm in Hilten when first husband Gerrit died and did Fenne then sell the Hilten farm and use the money to buy farm
land adjacent to the Kleine Masselink farm in Hardinghausen which was known as the Masselink Farm until the early 1900's? Is this the reason that Fenne's second husband became a Colon?
The term "Colon" was an upgrade in status, denoting that they were now independent farmers with a larger leasehold. This meant that the farm was now self sufficient and they no longer had to work part time on another farm to sustain themselves. Despite the increase in combined landholdings, their surname would always remain Kleine (Small) Masselink because Fenne was a
descendant of a farmer named Masselink, who sometime before 1660, inherited the smaller share of the original Masselink farm that was split unequally among two heirs. Our Masselink family became the Kleine Masselink (the one with the smaller inherited share) while the other Masselink family became the Grote or Grosse Masselink (the one with the larger inherited share).
(2nd) 1791 Feb 6 to Hendrik Groene (1753-1810) in Uelsen, just before Fenne turned 20. At the time of the marriage, Hendrik Groene changed his name to Kleine Masselink because FENNE had a land dowry that required the farm to stay in the Kleine Masselink family name; Hendrik became the FIRST known Colon of the Kleine Masselink farm sometime after their 1791 marriage (see above); Five children (GEN 6) born in Hardinghausen with surname Kleine Masselink: 6.1 Gerrit Hendrik (1792), 6.2 Janna (1794), 6.3 Aale (1799), 6.4 Jan (1804) and 6.5 Hendrikjen (1807).
(3rd) 1811 Sep 4 to Gerrit Koelman in Uelsen; At the time of the marriage Gerrit Koelman changed his name to Kleine Masselink because at that time, it was customary when a farmer’s daughter married and her husband came to work and live on the farm where his wife resided to also take
her surname (Kleine Masselink) as his Rufname, that is the name he will be known as after the
marriage. One child (GEN 6) born in Hardinghausen with surname Kleine Masselink: 6.6
Hendrika (1812).
[Per 2015 Jun Email from E. H. Masselink in NL: Fenne Kleine Masselink was the daughter of Hindrik Kleine Masselink and Ale Holthuis. She was married three times and had a daughter from her second marriage who was named Janna Masselink, the father of Janna [was Fenne's husband,] Hindrik Groene. At that time it was customary when a farmer’s daughter married and her husband came to work and live on the farm where his wife resided to also take her name, so in this case Hindrik Masselink was born Hindrik Groene. Janna had two relations, the result of the first relation with an unknown fellow she gave birth to a son and named him Lambert Evert Masselink. He got the name Masselink because the father was an “unknown”. This Lambert Evert was born in 1823 and was my (Eef Masselink) great-grandfather.]

5.4 Jan Hendrik Kleine Masselink (Jan Masselink) (1779 GB 5); Father Hendrik Kleine Masselink (1747); * 1779 Mar 13 Hardinghausen; + 1852 Sep 8 Molendijk, Hoogeveen, Drenthe, Netherlands; Emigrated to Hoogeveen, NL where many of his descendants still live; According to Masselink family tree:
1. When Jan left Bentheim, he dropped ‘Kleine’ from surname and used Dutch spelling
'Masselink' (first spelled 'Maslink', then 'Masselink')
2. Both son Hendrik (1826) and daughter Niessien (1834) originally had surname Maslink
3. Son Albert (1829) is first known Kleine Masselink to have name spelled 'Masselink', as have all Jan’s known descendants since
Jan not listed in either the German Kleine Masselink or Masselink registry; Jan is listed on Masselink family tree as son of Hendrik Kleine Masselink (1747); Occupation carpenter (Timmerman) and textile dyer (Vervener).
