1872 APR 04 After a public auction of three new wagons, some woodwork and some implements, commenced their journey to America; Harm is a wheelwright and builder of carriages, hence the sell of his inventory before emigrating; Brother Hendrik takes them by wagon to Lingen (about 25 miles); From Lingen to Leer, Harm and Geesje travel about 65 miles by train.
1872 APR 8 Arrive in Bremerhaven, Germany from Leer by boat
1872 APR 09+ "Stayed in Bremerhaven 18 hours and then taken to a larger boat that was anchored a short distance from shore; Then a big storm took place but about noon went out to sea; But, oh what a storm! The waves were dashing clear over the ship and there was much seasickness among the passengers. The boat went through the storm and reached Hull, England in safety. At Hull our baggage was inspected so as to intercept any smuggling. From Hull we took a train through 13 or 14 tunnels through the mountains to Liverpool. We stayed for one week. We became infested with vermin but our board was good and we stayed at the expense of the company."

Winter 1872-1873+ Sells farm back to his brother Jan and to Geert Freiman (Freeman) for $400; buys a 50 acre farm from Jan Scholten for $875; Farm is entirely covered with primeval forest which intercepted the cold of winter; Erects a house on this farm and moves in when about a half of it was finished; No neighbors in sight because of the trees and woods; During these years works as a carpenter a large part of the time and contracted to have 20 acres cleared for $20; After entire farm is cleared, buys an additional 10 acres from Henry Boerman for $90
