1885 Mar 10 PR is born in Fremont, MI in the vicinity of Reeman. His mother, Etta, writes in Dutch in the Dutch language family Bible: "Poet Reemt Masselink geb (born) 10 Mart 1885". (Mart is the misspelled Dutch month of March, Maart). PR is named after Etta's father, Poet Reemt Poets, according to the naming tradition of the Old Country that the second son is named after the mother's father. His birth name is recorded in the official "Return of Births in the County of Newago (Michigan) records as Remt Masselink, a white male born in Sheridan Township.

1893 Future wife Martha Peters born in Ackley, Franklin County, Iowa.
http://www.geni.com/people/Martha-Masselink-Peters/6000000001932113853
1913 PR and Martha married in Leota, MN; Eight children, all born in Edgerton, MN.
1945 PR retires at age 60 from actively running his farm.
1956 PR and Martha move from Edgerton, MN to Grand Rapids, MI
1984 Feb 26 Date of death; PR is buried in Grand Rapids, MI; Cause of death is pneumonia, flu and old age. He lives to be a few days short of 99 years.
PR is known by anything but Paul, his real first name, as he dislikes it. His wife, Martha, always called him Reemt, as did others. In Minnesota, he was usually known as PR, and some, especially in Grand Rapids, call him Paul Reemt. If someone presses him for his first name, he would admit to "Paul".
Reemt was born in 1895 and I remember little about him until Minnesota. My first memory of him was when he came back from Edgerton and had bought a red Reeves 3/4 horsepower gasoline engine. The neighbors all had 1 1/2 horsepower Chore Boys. The Reeves had brass couplings and always ran like a charm. We used it to run the washing machine, the churn and various household chores. Like the Curtis Mathis TV, it cost a little bit more but was worth it.
When I was eight or so, Reemt saw an ad in the Sioux City Journal for a Ranger Bicycle from the Mead Cycle Company in Chicago. After some consultation, he sent for it. It came in a crate, red with black trim, a roller bearing chain and a new departure, a coaster brake. Really deluxe. I can still see Reemt assembling it on the kitchen floor. I was too small for it, so we took off the seat and wrapped a gunny sack around the frame. I learned to ride by starting from the cement cover of the septic tank north of the house. I often passed the Mead Cycle Company on the Elevated train when we lived in Chicago.
At parties, Reemt knew how to pound paper through the table. He also could by telepathy identify a secret person in the room using prearranged code words and give airplane rides to a blindfolded person standing on a table leaf. You lifted the board a few inches and rocked it. A part-time magician.
Reemt rode horseback. Not Topsy who was tame. His horse was Ned, a black Percheron who had to be held with a strong bridle. When he got married, he picked Ned and Mollie as his team. Shortly before Reemt died, I mentioned Ned and Mollie to him and immediately his face brightened.
PR is a man who is well liked and respected by all who knew him and is he dearly loved by his family and children. He is a fairly soft spoken man and has a quiet authority that emanates from his baritone voice and relaxed demeanor. He is not a big talker, but when he has something to say, he says it...and people listened. He is patient and always listens, hearing you out. PR is also very warm and caring about people and loving of his family which is very progressive, if not actually well ahead of his time. As a dedicated Christian heavily involved with his church, missions and local schools, his values are plain to see. He does not wear his religion on his sleeve, instead he simply lives it by respecting other's beliefs and values without uttering an unkind word about anyone.
He is a hard, but not fanatical or obsessive worker. In his 70's, he can still dig a long ditch in heavy clay in hot weather or fix a drying machine by crawling through the steel corkscrew thing no bigger than himself. He retires from actively running his farm when he is 60 and moves to Edgerton, renting out his farm, which was located between Edgerton and Chandler, MN. Henry Blom (his daughter Lucy's husband) moves there before 1951 and runs it after that. In 1956, PR and Martha move from Edgerton to Grand Rapids. From there, they move to Raybrook Manor after Martha breaks her hip when PR is in his early 80's. While they were in Raybrook Manor/Holland Home, and especially after his wife Martha dies, his daughters and family would take turns visiting several times a week, almost daily. A flu epidemic spreads through Raybrook, and PR is among the last to catch it, but finally does and it leads to pneumonia. He lives to be a few days short of 99 years.
He and Martha loved each other deeply and showed that in every way, and that continued to the end. One Sunday in church a new family had moved in from Ackley, IA. The father, George Peters, had come a few months earlier and had built a sway backed barn. They also had a pretty daughter named Martha. As far as Reemt was concerned, that was it. Riding his horse Ned, he managed to get over there and he saw stars ever since. They were wonderfully suited for each other. The minister on family visitation asked "How do you feel about headship in the family?" They looked a bit astonished and said they had never thought about it. In all the years they were married, the fireworks never stopped.
Reemt and Martha were two adventurous people. When they were 80 and possibly more, the Greyhound Bus ran an ad that said: "A summer of unlimited travel for $100". Directly their juices started to flow...where all could that take them? Out came the maps. They settled on a western route: Louisiana, Texas, Grand Canyon, and the Painted Desert in California. The return trip maybe by the way of Las Vegas, Yellowstone, Black Hills and maybe Edgerton. If you cannot dream dreams, you do not come up with a plan like that.
Above recollections by PR's youngest brother, Rev. Dr. Edward Masselink.

Martha Peters Masselink
Martha (birth name Martje) Peters and PR Masselink loved each other greatly; that was obvious. She called him 'Reemt' always and he called her 'Martha'; no 'Honey' etc., just love and respect. But theirs was not an easy life. Martha, in addition to bearing 6 children in 8 years, with two more after that, did everything herself. She had a large garden, from which the family ate while canning what they ate in the colder months. No freezers or refrigerators. She and PR were pretty much self sufficient except for a few things.
To hear my mother Anna (PR and Martha's daughter) speak, and my own observations while young, Martha wasn't as relaxed as PR and made that known as well, which is no wonder considering all the kids and hard work. But she was dedicated to her family, her husband and her community. When she had more time after the kids grew up, she was involved in her church and schools as well.
When she died at 87 years, my mother Annie told me the doctor said that she was 'totally worn out'. Like PR, she was also progressive. When PR bought a car early on, she was determined to learn to drive, and she did. My sisters, Etta and Joanne, also used the car to drive to High School.
PR quickly made use of new machinery and developments. He also believed in quality. Martha had a washing machine powered by the finest gasoline engine of its day, the engine being used for other purposes as well. Grandpa PR also had a Buick back in the later 1940's, although his last car was a 1960 white Ford. He also had John Deere [tractors]; I remember that from the mid 1940's.
When they moved to Edgerton in 1944, I remember visiting them over the years. I remember PR's mother,Etta Poets, sometimes living with them during Etta's last years [and to give some respite to Etta's son, Andrew and his wife, Bena as Etta was difficult to take of during her last years]. Martha's house was always warm and open, and I got to play their foot-pedal organ. But the Living Room was off limits except for special company!
Martha's last days were preceded by a broken hip, causing them to move to the retirement home, where she later had some strokes, causing them to move to the nursing care section. The last one paralyzed her from the neck down according to my sister, Trudy Masselink. She passed away shortly thereafter.
What I, as their oldest grandchild remember, however, was love and warmth.

In 1941, Gerald married Johanna Baar and in 1952 they moved to California to make their home. Gerald worked for Paramount Aluminum, a foundry that produced marine products and fencing, and later became its operations manager until his retirement in the early 1980's.
After his wife's death in 1995, Gerald married Jennie (Gunnink) Bandstra in 1996 and they made their home in Ontario, CA. For the past seven years, they traveled back and forth from Ontario in the winter to Chandler in the summer months. Gerald was a past elder of the Artesia Christian Reformed Church in Artesia, CA for many years and was very active in evangelism and mission work there. He was a current member of the Ontario Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Ontario, CA, and served on the church council there. He enjoyed camping and the outdoors, watching NASCAR, western movies and listening to country western music. He was also an avid sports fan, especially baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers and in later years the Minnesota Twins. His parents, first wife, Johanna, and three sisters, Etta, Gertrude and Lucille preceded him in death.
