German Americans are the largest ancestral group in the United States. According to the 2005 census, some 49 million Americans identify 'German' as their ancestry. The first significant numbers arrived in the 1680's and some eight million German immigrants have entered the United States since that time. The largest number came between 1820 and 1910, when over five million Germans emigrated. Around 4,000 came to the United States from Grafschaft Bentheim between 1847 and 1956 (to include my ancestors) and most of them joined the Christian Reformed Church upon their arrival.
Listed below are Generations Seven and Eight.
They departed Grafschaft Bentheim forever for three reasons: Religious freedom, economic opportunity, and to avoid having their children drafted into the Prussian Army. The picture above is the Scandinavian, the combination sail and steamship that brought Harm Kleine Masselink and his pregnant wife, Geesje (Grace in the USA), to Quebec, Canada in 1872. From there, they took another vessel to Ellis Island, New York.
My direct ancestors, Gerrit Hendrik (GH), his father Hendrick, his Uncles Jan and Harm, his sisters Fenna, Hendrikjen, Harmina, and Alyda, and his future wife, Etta Poets, all emigrated to Michigan in the second half of the 19th century. There are no known people today in Grafschaft Bentheim with the surname Kleine Masselink. At the bottom of this page is a picture of the ship that brought Gerrit Hendrick's father, sisters, and future wife to America. The picture below is of Gerrit Hendrick's Uncle Jan, his father Hendrick, and his Uncle Harm. This is a composite picture; each individual picture was taken in a different year. Hendrick was about 53 at the time of the picture, his brother's ages are unknown.
Upon arrival in America, my ancestors shortened and changed their Kleine Masselink surname to Masselink, which is the Dutch spelling of the German surname Masseling. When they arrived in the USA, they proudly declared themselves as Separatists, i.e., Seceders from the Dutch State Church who founded the Christian Reformed Church in the United States).

GENERATION SEVEN
Hendrick Kleine Masselink
(Henry Masselink in the USA)
< This picture of Hendrick Kleine Masselink was probably taken as part of the immigration process required by U. S. law after 1880. He emigrated to the United States in 1882 and was about 53 years old when this picture was taken. Hendrick was the last of three brothers (Jan and Harm had preceded him) to emigrate from Grafschaft Bentheim to Michigan.
From the picture, you can see his purported piercing eyes and that his hair that was already turning quite gray.
Hendrick became a Colon (Independent Farmer) of their family farm in Hardinghausen, Grafschaft Bentheim, upon the death of his father. In Germany, he was formally known as Colon Hendrick Kleine Masselink as being a Colon was a significant achievement for a farmer in that this title depicted him as the hereditary leaseholder of a farm that was large enough and successful enough to be self-sufficient, which meant that he did not have to work at another farm to support himself and his family (which was common at that time).

1881 Hendrick's son, Gerrit Hendrick, emigrates to Michigan (See Born in the USA Tab)
1882 Hendrick marries his second wife, Altie Ratterank Atman, in Germany before emigrating to Michigan; No children
1882 Nov 8: Hendrick emigrates with his new wife, his four unmarried daughters and Etta Johanna Poets (his son Gerrit Hendrick's future wife) from Antwerp, Belgium to New York on the ship Belgenland and then travel by train to Allegan County, MI. Hendrick purchases 31 acres of farmland in Laketown Township, Allegan, MI where "for some years he followed agricultural pursuits successfully". Hendrick is also known as Henry Masselink in the U.S. See below for a picture of the ship Belgenland
18?? Hendrick has a pig farm on Black Lake (now Lake Macatawa) in Holland, MI.
1887 Hendrick's stepson John A. Atman (son of his second wife, Altie Ratterank Atman) emigrates from Germany to Allegan County, MI
