GENERATION 1
Harmen and Fenne Masselink (<1660-1731). These are our oldest Masselink ancestors known by name. We are not sure if Harmen or if Fenne was the Masselink, as it was not uncommon for a husband to take his wife's last name (in German, his new last name was known as his rufname i.e., the new surname by which he would be called) if the wife inherited the family farm as the farm was required to remain in the original family name. There are also conflicting records as to when our ancestors became a Kleine Masselink, as one only becomes a 'Kleine' (Small Farmer) when a family farm is split into two unequal parts, (often 3/4 and 1/4) and your ancestor inherited the smaller part. When that happened, your official new surname would be Kleine Masselink and would denote forever in Germany that an ancestor received the smaller share of a farm inheritance.
